Air and Dirt Separators: Essential Components for Efficient HVAC Systems

Air and dirt separators play a critical role in maintaining the efficiency and longevity of HVAC systems. These devices are designed to remove microbubbles and dirt particles from water in heating and cooling circuits, ensuring optimal system performance and reducing maintenance costs.

What Are Air and Dirt Separators?

Air and dirt separators are specialised components used in HVAC systems to eliminate dissolved air and particulate matter from circulating water. Dissolved air can lead to microbubble formation, which in turn causes corrosion, pump failure, and reduced system efficiency. Dirt particles can clog components, leading to costly repairs and inefficiencies.

The CleanVent CVAD range combines air and dirt separation in a single unit, making it an excellent solution for both hot and chilled water systems. Constructed from high-quality stainless steel, these separators ensure durability, efficiency, and resistance to corrosion.

Why Install Air and Dirt Separators in HVAC Systems?

  1. Improved System Efficiency: By removing air and dirt, separators reduce energy loss and ensure optimal heat transfer within the system.

  2. Extended Component Life: Eliminating contaminants reduces wear and tear on pumps, valves, and other critical components.

  3. Lower Maintenance Costs: Clean systems require less frequent servicing, saving time and resources.

  4. Prevention of Corrosion: Removing dissolved gases minimises the risk of corrosion, protecting the integrity of pipes and other components.

  5. Enhanced System Stability: Stable water circulation without air or dirt ensures consistent performance, reducing the likelihood of breakdowns.

Applications of Air and Dirt Separators

  1. Air and dirt separators are versatile and suitable for various HVAC applications:

  2. Heating Systems: Installed on the main flow from boilers, they remove microbubbles and debris, preventing blockages and improving thermal efficiency.

  3. Chilled Water Systems: Positioned in the return line near the chiller, they ensure smooth operation by eliminating contaminants that can affect cooling performance.

  4. Industrial and Commercial Systems: Essential for large-scale installations to maintain system reliability and efficiency.

Choosing the Right Air and Dirt Separator

Selecting the correct separator depends on factors such as system size, flow rate, and pressure requirements. The CleanVent range offers models suitable for diverse applications, with options for air, dirt, combination air & dirt and demountable versions.

Why Choose CleanVent separators for Your HVAC System?

  • Durability: Stainless steel ensures longevity and resistance to environmental factors.

  • Efficiency: Advanced technology provides effective removal of air and dirt.

  • Ease of Use: Maintenance-friendly design allows for quick and hassle-free servicing.

  • Sustainability: CleanVent’s robust construction reduces waste and environmental impact.

Installation of Air, Dirt, or Combined Separators

 Simple and Effective Installation Process

  • Installing an air, dirt, or combined separator in your HVAC system ensures optimal performance and longevity. For heating systems, the unit should be installed at the hottest part of the system, typically on the main flow from the boilers. In chilled water systems, the separator is best placed in the return line near the chiller.

  • Key Considerations for Installation:

  • Location: Ensure the separator is installed before pumps to prevent microbubble formation and debris circulation.

  • Static Head Limitations: For heating systems, static head must not exceed 60 metres; for chilled water systems, the limit is 40 metres.

  • Maintenance Access: Position the separator where routine maintenance, such as flushing dirt or venting air, can be easily performed.

  • System Compatibility: Verify that the chosen separator matches system specifications, including pressure, temperature, and flow rate requirements.

The CleanVent CVAD range is designed for straightforward integration into new or existing systems, with minimal commissioning requirements. Each unit is equipped with a fast-bleed valve for air venting during system filling and a dirt drain valve for efficient maintenance.
